Motorola Droid X is the latest addition to the series of similarly-equipped smart phones namely HTC EVO 4G, Apple iPhone 4 and the Galaxy S. This offering from Verizon Wireless could easily become the best Android phone around. A 4.3 inches high resolution display, 1Ghz processor, 16GB of storage and an 8 megapixel camera are among the many notable features of the device.

Design, Dimensions

The Droid X is a liitle big in size like the HTC EVO but slightly taller. It has a rubbery back that feels good in hand. The Droid is slimmer than the EVO but is raised in certain areas like the top portion of the phone where the camera lens and flash are located. Its dimensions are 5x2.6x0.4 inches and weighs only about 5.47 ounces.

Camera

The Motorola Droid has an 8megapixel camera with dual-LED flash. It offers a great picture quality. The zoom also works well. Colors come out very well and there are othershooting modes too like sepia and black and white which also work very well. Videos can also be captured in 720p and two modes are available namely slow motion and fast motion modes.

Basic Features

The Droid X is a pocket-sized home theatre with a glorius 4.3 inches display that lets you enjoy your movies and videos. It also has a powerful processor that offers a great speed with applications opening up as soon as they are selected. It makes use of high performance antennas along with some software support that allows improvements in signal strength and reduces dropped calls.

Interface

The Droid runs on the Android 2.1. Widgets for social networking sites, updates, weather forecasts, photo gallery etc are available. Moreover the widgets can be resized and arranged on the screen. Additional widgets can be added on any one of the seven home screens that Android offers.

Screen

The Motorola Droid X has a 4.3inches display that is huge and bright and has a pixel resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. The screen looks wonderful while viewing texts, photos or video. The multitouch display not only offers pinch-to-zoom gesture but also allows two buttons to be pressed at a time. A proximity sensor and an in-built accelerometer helps in changing the screen orientation.

Keypad and Controls

The Droid does not have a physical keyboard. It has a virtual keyboard on the touchscreen. It works well in both landscape and portrait mode, although it looks a little cramped in portrait mode.

The power button and the headphone jack are present on the top of the device. The volume and camera button are present on the right hand side. On the left side of the phone is the charge/sync port and the HDMI port. Below the screen there are 4 buttons -menu, home, back, and search.

Audio

The droid has a built-in media player. The external speakers produce quality sound and the volume is good too. Even at the highest volume there is no distortion and a great sound is produced. By plugging the 3.5mm headset jack one can enjoy the FM radio too. Music applications can also be downloaded from the Android Market.

Motorola phones have the reputation of producing a good sound quality at both ends of the call. Droid X is not an exception.

Messaging

Droid supports SMS, MMS, Email, Push Mail. However there are some glitches in this area. It has been noted that there are some issues like incoming and outgoing messages don't get properly updated in the message queue. Also, message notifications gets delayed.

Media

One look at the Motorola Droid X and you know that it was designed to be a powerhouse of entertainment. There aren't too many media elements apart from he music player, video playe, youTube applications and a demo of the game NFS shift, but these are enough to realize the potential of the device. Watching videos in the YouTube application in the wonderful screen is an amazing experience.

And playing NFS here is silky smooth and it will make one want to purchase the game. Besides a DLNA application is also included to facilitate sharing and streaming of media wirelessly.

Internet

Web browsing is a good expeience. With a 4.3 inches display web browsing is always comfortable. Both Verizon's 3G network connectivity and WiFi loades sites quickly and crisply. The pinch-to-zoom gesture is available here. However, the phone lacks Flash at launch- expexted soon in Android 2.2.

Storage

The Motorola Droid x comes with 8 GB of onboard memory and a 16GB memory card that is pre-installed into the device. The memory is expandable up to 40GB and a 32 GB memory card is also added to store videos, games, photos and the likes.

Connectivity and Data

The Droid X features the Bluetooth 2.1. It also comes with an optional HDMI cable or Digital Living Network Alliance(DLNA) technology to share or stream media with compatible devices.

Usability & Performance

The Droid X is a responsive device that is quick to perform whatever task you need. Applications open almost immediately. However web pages take a little time to open. This is not very surprising because the phone is running on a 1GHz processor(OMAP). The call quality of the phone is also decent. However the tests gave better results outside than in the interiors of a building. Thus, in low coverage areas the call quality is average.

Also, the WiFi works perfectly well and so does the device's 3G wireless hotspot functionality. This feature allows users to share their Net connection with other computers.

The Motorola RIZR Z3 is being tagged by most people as the slide version of the very popular Motorola RAZR phones. And rightly so as the RIZR Z3 does resemble the build and character of the RAZR and even share a lot with regards to its looks and function. It must be noted that the RIZR Z3 is the first slider design from Motorola to be offered to the European and American market.

It is a handset that is both pleasing to view and hold as it is a great piece of technology engulfed by steel and rubber casing, giving it a very solid and sturdy feel, regardless of its dimensions. Although definitely not the world's slimmest phone, which Samsung probably holds the record to, to make a slider with such a dimension of only 16 mm thin is quite an achievement and definitely holds its own.

A lot of the functions that previous users of Motorola, especially the RAZR and MOTOKZR series can still be found here. The RIZR Z3 shares the same specifications of the KRZR with the design element being the most obvious difference. The advantage of the RIZR Z3's design is that most of the functions can be accessed even when the unit is slid shut, thanks to the 5 way navigation pad that is situated on the RIZR Z3's facade when the slider is closed. Even the voice commands and camera buttons are easily accessed at the side of the unit.

Motorola RIZR Z3 Camera and Display

The Motorola RIZR Z3 is equipped with a two mega pixel camera that can both function as a digital camera or a camcorder. Pictures can be captured at a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels, enough for all around use and may prove to be handy when the need for quick photo documentation arises. The camera on the RIZR Z3 is rather straightforward and easy to use and most people will have no trouble fiddling with it. It also has the basic features we have all come to expect from digital cameras and camera phones alike, such as color schemes, image rotation, frame insertions, contrast settings and brightness. The camera also supports different popular image formats so the user can choose which format suits him best.

With regards to the output, the images come out smooth with not much noise that is expected from two mega pixel and below camera phones. Although the colors can use a bit more vibrancy, as the images tend to look dull and uninspiring. It does however have fun and useful features such as the six color effects, multishot option, adjustable exposure settings, a self timer, 8x optical zoom

Video captured with the RIZR Z3's camera utilizes the increasingly popular 3gp format or the mpeg4 format with a choice of 176 x 144 and 128 x 96 pixels. The length of recording videos is dependent of course to the available memory.

The screen display on the RIZR Z3 is at 176 x 220 pixels or 1.9 inches, which is relatively larger than most phones of its class. The improvement from the 65,000 colors of the KRZR's screen to that of the RIZR Z3's 262,000 is very apparent as images can be viewed better and even the text is more legible.

Motorola RIZR Z3 Design and Accessories

At only 16 mm thick, the RIZR Z3 is rather one of the thinnest mobile phones out in the market, especially when taking into consideration that this is a slider phone. The five way navigation key is nicely raised above the phone's surface making it easier to operate and not fumble around with it. What's more is that the toggle can be programmed as user defined functions making the phone adapt to the user's needs. The other keys on the façade such as the clear, talk, web browser and power buttons though is not as user friendly as the navigation key as they are not spaced out much and are rather small. This is especially hard for those with bigger fingers.

Being a slider phone, one of the things users usually check is the assembly of the top (screen) and bottom (keypad) panels of the phone, whether it creaks and feels flimsy or is it built to last. No need to worry about that with the RIZR Z3 as the spring activated slider on this phone is quite sturdy without the squeaks and creaks normally present with slider phones. The steel and rubber casing adds to this phone's sturdy and stable feel. Plus the weight of the RIZR Z3 makes handling the phone feel more solid, which at 115 grams does not really weigh that much even compared to phones of its class.

For transferring your files such as mp3's or images even without a wireless computer setup, the RIZR Z3 ships with a USB cable and moving files from the phone to your computer and vice-versa is close to effortless. And with an expanded memory of 1 Gigabyte, you can easily fit in as much as 1,000 songs give or take. The card slot though is behind the battery cover and together with the SIM card could be a tricky process to pry out or slip in.

Summary of Motorola RIZR Z3 Features

Weight: 115 g

Width: 46 mm

Data: GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth v2.0 stereo (A2DP), USB v1.1

Connectivity: EDGE, USB v1.1, Bluetooth v2.0 (A2DP)

Web Browser: WAP, XHTML, GPRS

Battery: Standard battery: Li-Ion 780 mAh (BC50), 6 hours and 40 minutes talk time, 230 hours stand by time

PROS: The slim and stylish design is definitely an attraction, and quite sturdy at such a small dimension at that. Features are quite ample for both work and fun. The spring loaded slider's build is solid and feels as though it would last for a very long time.

CONS: The picture quality with its 2 mega pixel camera, although fine leaves a lot to be desired. Especially with it's lackluster color. The memory expansion slot and SIM card slot is rather hard to access.

Overall: The Motorola RIZR Z3 is a trendy all around handset with plenty of features to keep those fingers busy for a while. It does have its shortcomings but once you weigh it against the pros and the fun starts, whatever is lacking can easily be overlooked. All in all, the Motorola RIZR Z3 is a great little package worthy of its own place in the mobile phone industry and eventually in our pockets.

We have yet another offering from Motorola: the Motorola V551. It is a clamshell type phone borrowing its looks from its older siblings like the Motorola V400. And lately it seems that Motorola has been rehashing the same designs over and over again that it gets hard keeping up with their handsets.

In fact there is not much difference between the V551 and earlier models except with regards to its functions and features. In a way, you could say that what Motorola is doing is a little like software updating rather than developing a completely different one. Bottom line is the Motorola V551 is everything we loved about the V400 up until the V600 plus what those others models lacked.

The issue with slow browsing speed with the V400's GPRS is answered with the V551's support of EDGE, making it as much as three times faster compared to the V400 when it comes to Web browsing. And with the V551's camera capabilities, sending photos and video clips is a breeze. A bit of gripe though is that the phone book duplicates an entry every time you store a different number for the same contact person. This means that if a contact on your phone book has three different phone numbers, the V551 will make three different entries for each. While this may be fine to some, it does get tedious when searching you phone book and it does fill up the allotted number of contacts easily.

A very welcome addition is the basic POP3 / IMAP4 email client. The V551 also has excellent support of the Bluetooth wireless technology. As a gaming gadget though, the V551 fared less than desirable. Although adequate and entertaining enough for passing time during long commutes, I reckon this to be not enough for the serious gamer. But not to take away from the V551 though, it is not of course what would be consumers will be looking for when trying out this handset.

Other features that consumers may find useful like the external picture caller ID for easier and generally more fun identification, a speaker independent voice dialing capability which is fast becoming a standard among mobile phones nowadays are unfortunately lacking with the V551.

Motorola V551 Camera and Display

The Motorola V551 comes integrated with a capable VGA camera that can take photos at different resolutions with the smallest being 160 x 120 pixels QQVGA, the medium setting at 320 x 240 pixels QVGA, and the largest image resolution is at 640 x 480 pixels VGA, with all settings coming out in 24-bit color at 16 million colors. When the V551 is in camera mode, the main screen display doubles as the viewfinder while also displaying information such as the phone's available memory, much like with standard consumer digital cameras. The navigation pad on the phone also acts as the 4x digital zoom control.

The use of the V551's digital zoom is not advisable though as it is digital and as such only makes a crop of the subject and enlarges it digitally much like when an image is enlarged on a computer. As a result, images become blurry and pixilated and generally not very good. That is unlike with an optical zoom wherein the lens makes adjustments to make the subject seem nearer, as though with the lens of a telescope. But as the mechanisms for an optical zoom would render handsets heavy and bulky, it would be a while before we see that possibility happening. Not to worry though as even without the optical zoom, images captured with the V551 camera is very decent and will be sufficient for general purposes.

Motorola V551 Design and Accessories

As earlier mentioned the Motorola V551 is more like an update of their earlier handsets such as the V400 and V600 and therefore comes in the familiar clamshell design. This is far from being a problem though as this design is indeed sleek and stylish that it deserves another incarnation. When the V551 is closed, some useful information such as caller ID, battery status and signal strength is displayed to the user via a cool monochrome screen with a blue motif. At 96 x 32 pixels, the information is displayed adequately and the blue backlight makes reading text easy on the eyes. Flipping the V551's top panel open reveals the beautiful main display which at sixty five thousand color capabilities gives off a warm and vivid aura. Relatively bigger than the external display quite for obvious reasons, the main TFT screen displays information as the ones on the external screen plus more. It is also customizable with various pre-loaded wallpapers and color themes.

PROS: The Motorola has an overall great design and those familiar with their earlier models will feel right at home even with the menu navigation. Pictures are decent enough. The very low price tag is of course a plus in anyone's book.

CONS: The absence of some features like the picture caller ID, although not very crucial, may turn off a lot of the prospected market share.

Overall: If you are looking to buy a reasonably priced mobile phone without looking cheap and without scrimping on features, then look no further than the Motorola V551. As it is a mobile phone first and foremost, it does this job very well and whatever lackluster performance you might experience with its other features are secondary anyway, these may be easily forgivable and overlooked.

The Motorola V547 is another clamshell offering from the makers of the RAZR series. Unlike the thin handsets like the aforementioned RAZR and the ROKR, this little mobile is a bit bulky and hefty. That being said though, this phone is quite cheap and may turn on a lot of consumers looking for a call and messaging solution with a few extras features without having to resort to extravagant handsets. Even compared to other devices of its class, the Motorola V547 still trumps the competition when it came to price.

Cheap as this mobile phone may be, it does not mean that Motorola held back on features. Fact of the matter is, the V547 has a few tricks under its sleeves that makes this phone a little more than what you bargained for.

First thing that you might like about this handset is the support for Bluetooth connectivity. It is quite a very useful feature that lets the user connect to other Bluetooth enabled devices such as computers or headphones, thus eliminating tangles of cables when transferring files to and from your data storage. In the end you save a lot of time and energy for such minimal though tedious tasks.

The V547 is also a quad band phone which means that frequent travelers will have no problem moving around the globe as you are surely to have local network support. Now that is the epitome of mobility.

This handset also comes preloaded with two games and may be just quite what you need when the need to pass the time arises. When you get bored with these games though, you can always download new ones. Although with the small memory offered with this unit and the lack of an expansion slot, there is barely space for a couple of more games.

Or if games are not your cup of tea, then a little bit of music might be in order. Although again, with the V547's limited storage capacity, the user's listening pleasure would not last very long. You may resort to transcoding your MP3 files (meaning to encode the files in a much lower bit rate, like 64 kbps perhaps rather than the standard 128 – 192 kbps) to make the file size smaller, therefore letting you fit more songs. Listening to music with this phone is not very advisable anyway as the battery life tends to be short at just a measly 140 hours on stand by and a shameful 2 hours of talk time. But for the business type who would probably hang around offices most of the day though, the short battery span should not be an issue.

Motorola V547 Camera and Display

The integrated VGA camera of the V547 is rated at below one mega pixel and can take photographs at 640 x 480 pixels. Of course one can not compare the V547's output with high end camera phones and should be judged accordingly. The images captured with the V547 is nothing special but indeed fared better than expected as I have been preparing for the worst. The images looked decent enough for you everyday fun but is of course nowhere near professional. And perhaps it would be wrong to demand this as the V547 is a mobile phone first and foremost. It does have a 4x digital zoom but it is never advisable to use it because the images become too pixilated. If there is any chance of physically moving closer to you subject, then that would be the way to go. And video recording is no better as well, especially with its very limited memory capacity. And if you must do so, the maximum recording for video is limited and quite short anyway. But again, just for its fun factor, then by all means try it.

With the lackluster picture and video quality in mind, it comes as a shame that the V547's display screen won't reach its full potential. Because although at only 176 x 220 pixels and can display only 65,536 colors, the display is clear and vivid but does nothing to present your pictures any better.

Motorola V547 Design and Accessories

Not to be outdone with the looks department, the Motorola V547 does indeed look stylish with clean lines and overall nice curves. As this is a clamshell like mentioned earlier, it comes across as a very professional looking phone. Plus with the handset in its closed position, there is not much “button clutter”, with only the secondary external display being prominent. With the phone flipped open, one will find the keypad's design clean and ergonomically placed together.

But as beautiful as this phone might be, it does have the tendency to scratch easily. So when putting this phone inside your pocket, you better be sure nothing is in there with it as even a tiny coin can give the cover a mighty scratch.

Summary of Motorola V547 Features

PROS: Bluetooth connectivity is so useful and is a nice feature on the V547. The stylish look of this phone also makes this a viable choice for consumers. Quad band makes it versatile and well suited for frequent travelers.

CONS: Battery life is one of the shortest I have experienced in a mobile phone. Plus the memory could have been spruced up a lot more, especially with the absence of an expansion slot for a higher capacity memory card.

Overall: All in all, if what you are looking for is a no frills phone with a very small price tag, then the Motorola V547 would be the right choice for you.

As of late, Motorola has been known to constantly develop mobile phones for the high end market. A lot of what we have witnessed from Motorola in fact is targeted towards the upper and business type class of people that it is easy for us to dismiss Motorola as a high end phone developer only. But once you get past all these assumptions, one will realize that Motorola also developed some of the world's better looking entry level mobile phones that are not only very affordable but is also crammed with as many features as the budget for this bracket might permit.

These "cheap" handsets from Motorola combine basic features and stylishness that give the mobile phone a very expensive and no nonsense look. The Motorola W490 is no exception from this category as it is very affordable with a list price of only $49 in America.

The Motorola W490 closely resembles the W385 in both its function and form. The interface is easy to use and Nokia and Samsung users will not have much trouble switching to the W490's no frills design.

The W490 has the capacity to store one thousand contacts with enough room for each entry for up to six phone numbers, a URL, two physical addresser, three email addresses, the contact's birthday and even the nick name. Callers can be saved into groups or attach an image to be displayed every time that contact dials you number. Calls can be heard via 42 polyphonic ring tones and other alert sounds. The W490 also features the common mobile phone features such as a calculator, a calendar, and alarm clock, a speakerphone, vibration mode, text messaging, multi media messaging and a world clock. USB mass storage, Bluetooth, instant messaging and voice commands are also present in the W490.

The W490 performed rather well and the quality of the T-mobile service was decent but there are times when the voice sounded a bit tiny. This didn't pose much of a problem though. That being said though, the signal was very clear and static-free and the volume is more than sufficient. The mic on the W490 didn't perform very well as the person on the other side of the conversation had trouble hearing me even on a not so noisy environment. But if one will think about it, these kinds of problems are present in almost all the mobile phones available in the market these days.

The W490 also claims to a stand by time of 14.6 days and talk time of 7.5 hours. Tests revealed though that the talk time is significantly more than what is reported. Now, this is definitely good news for most of us still looking for budget mobile phones that won't scrimp on the power.

Motorola W490 Camera and Display

The Motorola W490 comes integrated with a 1.3 mega pixel camera and can take pictures in four different resolutions. There are also three quality settings that the user can further tweak. Also there are five lighting modes including exposure metering, five color tones, four different shutter sounds with a silent option, night option and what came as a complete surprise is the 8x digital zoom which is much more than what higher end models have to offer. It is quite disappointing though to find out that the W490 does not have a flash included. Images also sometimes come out as either blurred or with dull colors.

Aside from pictures, the camera on this phone is also able to capture videos in 15 second clip with sound. With only 5MB of memory though, not much can be stored in the phone. And what's more, the W490 does not offer a slot for expanding the memory.

Personalization with the W940 can be achieved with a wide choice of wallpapers and screen savers. Of course, more options are available for download from T-Mobile's TZone activities.

Motorola W490 Design and Accessories

The design of the Motorola W490 is rather svelte and is of the clamshell type. And at only 3.77 ounces, the handset is overflowing with features that even heavier phones would lack. When closed, the W490 looks sleek and minimal with just the tiny screen serving as a window against the all black background. And when I said window, it was rather literal as the small screen does let the user see a preview of what is in the bigger screen when the phone is flipped open. Information such as when a messaged is received or the time is displayed on the small screen so that the user won't have to open the phone each and every time messages have to be checked.

Summary of Motorola W490 Features

Weight: 3.77 oz - 107 g

Battery: 7.5 hours talk time, 350 hours stand by time

PROS: Although very cheap, the Motorola W490 does give a very expensive air with its svelte and almost entirely black design. The addition of the “preview” screen on the front flip panel is also a nice touch.

CONS: Call quality on the W490 could and should be greatly improved as there are times when the person on the other side of the conversation has trouble hearing the user.

Overall: Regardless of its very minor flaws, the Motorola W490 is still a great choice pound per pound as a communication tool. If full call and messaging functionality is your thing without the modern frills associated with mobile phones, then this is clearly the handset for you.

Announced last December 2005 and available for quite some time now, the Motorola A1200 Ming, also known by its nick name as the Motorola Ming is a Linux based smart phone from Motorola. It utilizes the flip design albeit with a transparent cover giving it a very sleek and futuristic edge. Targeted for the business type consumer, it also features a very useful business card reader.

Contrary to the transparent, plastic flip cover though, the Motorola Ming feels rather sturdy and comfortable in the hand. It is a very mobile gadget considering its applications, weighing in at only 122 g and measuring 95.7 x 51.7 x 21.5 mm (height, width and thickness respectively). Compared to other mobile phones it may be quite hefty but keep in mind that this is a smart phone and the weight and bulk issues quickly disappears.

Motorola A1200 Ming Camera and Display

The QVGA display screen on the Motorola Ming is capable of displaying up to 262,000 colors and gives a very brilliant glow, making it readable even under intense brightness especially when used outdoors under harsh sunlight. What's more, with the transparent screen, the user does not always have to flip the phone open every time the need to view the screen arises.

The Motorola Ming's excellent screen display is also the perfect compliment for the phone's 2.0 mega pixel camera which can take pictures in three different resolutions: 1200 x 1600, 768 x 1024, and 480 x 640 pixels. Now, a 2.0 mega pixel lens is nothing to boast one might think, especially compared to competing smart phones equipping their models up to 5.0 mega pixel cameras. But with the case of the Motorola Ming we must be able to experience its output first before we can judge it accordingly.

As common in probably all smart phones and even entry level camera phones for that matter, the Motorola Ming has applications for further tweaking your captured images. The user have different options to alter the photo quality such as switching to night mode and rendering their photos with effects such as sepia, black and white, solarize and negative. The Motorola Ming's camera functions also boast of an auto white balance system and are quite accurate for most situations. What works exceptionally good is the macro mode, for when taking pictures at close proximities. As one might expect, the unit also has a dedicated camera button that is accessible even with the Motorola Ming's flip cover closed.

Aside from the Motorola Ming's photo capabilities, the camera can also capture videos at resolutions from 128 x 96 pixels to as much as 176 x 44. The more memory you have, the longer video clips you can record. With this regard the microSD expansion slot will be quite handy.

Going through your collection of videos and photos are a cinch with the Motorola Ming's very capable and user-friendly 5-way navigation pad situated at the bottom of the screen display. Videos and MP3's can be played back with the bundled RealPlayer through either the supplied headphones or via its loudspeaker. This brings us to the accessories portion of this article.

Motorola A1200 Ming Design and Accessories

Music played with the Motorola Ming sounded crisp and clear and without the clips and distortions normally associated with mobile phone playbacks, especially when listened through the loudspeakers. When using consumer headphones for better quality playback though, one would need an adaptor since the Motorola A1200 Ming does not have the standard 3.5 mm audio jack ports. Once you make a purchase for an adaptor though, the user can be assured of a beautiful and hassle free playback experience and may be worth the additional price tag.

What is under the hood of the Motorola Ming is complemented by it's beautiful and sleek exterior. While the front features the aforementioned transparent, plastic yet sturdy flip cover, the Motorola Ming is encased in a soft, rubber compound. This compound is especially designed for maximum grip and also renders the unit virtually scratch resistant. Chrome accents are present as with the sides, hinges and the back of the earpiece. Looking at the back of the Motorola Ming, the chrome accent is extended with the camera lens being enveloped in chrome too. At the back you will also find the stylus silo. And speaking of the stylus, it is just the right weight (not too light like most) and feels tough. At the lower part of the Motorola Ming's back is where the loudspeaker is situated.

Motorola A1200 Ming Features

Weight: 122 g

Battery: Standard Battery, Li-Ion 850 mAh (BT50), Up to 4 hours talk time, Up to 200 hours stand by time

PROS: Although not popular with many people, the Linux operating system is one of the most user friendly interfaces available today and is a nice inclusion in the Motorola Ming's package. Customization capabilities such as wallpapers, although not as important as the main functions of the phone is very attractive. The stylus on this unit also works great as it does not fall on the trap of most models equipping their units with styluses that are either to light or too short, or both.

CONS: The camera on the Motorola Ming although very capable at 2.0 mega pixels is less than what one might expect from a smart phone, especially with competitors equipping their smart phones with more camera capabilities, with some going as much as 5.0 mega pixels.

Overall: If you are the business type who still knows how to have fun and want to project a very unique individuality, then the Motorola A1200 Ming is the perfect smart phone for you. Young urban professionals will especially delight in its useful “work” functions and enjoy the fun side of the Motorola Ming during lax hours.

Motorola unveiled yet another addition to their W Series phones, the Motorola W270. To be released during the first quarter of 2008, it is a budget phone and then some. So as expected, it therefore lacks the thrills and spills the modern cell phone aficionados around the globe have come to love and expect from mobile phones.

The clamshell body of the W270 is more akin to Motorola's highly successful line of RAZR phones, albeit thicker, and stripped of all its inside frills. It is intended for the no - nonsense user looking for a phone that does a good job of doing what a mobile phone is supposed to do in the first place, namely for voice calls and text messages. Being that as it is, one has to be careful when judging the W270. It is a mobile phone first and foremost, with just the added secondary features of MP3 capabilities and some other "strictly" useful apps. The interface is user friendly and both novice and advanced users will take no time at all familiarizing themselves with it.

Unlike the Motorola W230 however, which is part of the W series of Motorola and intended for the Indian market, the W270 is geared towards the African market instead. With that in mind, it operates on dual band GSM 900 / GSM 1800 and has seven African languages in its database.

Motorola W270 Camera and Display

What! No camera? Well, as mentioned above, expect no "much more than what you need" mega pixel camera here. As it is intended for the budget concious consumer, a camera would only add so much to its cost and would greatly defeat its purpose. It does however have a decent screen that is able to display 65K colors at a 128 x 128 pixel resolution. Just the ample size for navigating through the W270's simple menu interface, or even for browsing the Web. The comparably smaller screen size plus the utilization of a CTSN screen technology instead of the popular TFT screen translates to longer battery life.

Motorola W270 Design and Accessories

A sure winner is the W270's RAZR inspired design, which is sure to attract a lot of multimedia phone weary people looking to "downgrade" instead. In this manner, what the W270 lacks in feature makes up with its stunning looks. Just because it can not do as much does not mean it can not do what it can in style, and style is what this phone has a lot of. It can catch the attention of both the male and female buyers and therefore can take home a big slice of the budget phone market pie. It is simple and minimalist in its approach, and this makes the design more effective. It can be viewed as either art brute or feminine chic, depending on who is using it. But one thing all people will agree on is that the W270 exhibits a futuristic flair. In fact its design will fit comfortably and can be given prominence in any futuristic Hollywood film production and not seem out of place.

With the obvious lack of a camera aside, the W270 does pull out all the stops when it comes to its other features. It comes with a pre-installed music player capable of playing back MP3 files, and it also has a stereo FM radio. Right out of the box, thanks to the included 256 Mb memory, the W270 can already be filled with a decent amount of songs to keep you excited until such time you can squeeze out enough dough for a memory upgrade of up to 2 gigabytes of microSD via the W270's memory card slot.

The 940mAh BQ50 battery performance is very impressive as well, offering up to 9 hours of talk time and 19 days of stand by time when fully charged. Here is where you appreciate the W270's dedication to its purpose. Because minus all the frills, the user can do with the Motorola W270 what it is intended to do for a longer period of time. No longer do you need to lug your charger every where you go. That's the whole point of mobility, isn't it? The W270 also supports dual band GSM technology, which is just what the basic user needs.

Summary of Motorola W270 Features

Weight: 94 g

Width: 45 mm

Height: 95 mm

Thickness: 17 mm

Network: GSM900 / GSM1800, Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots), 32 - 48 kbps

Screen Resolution: Graphical CSTN, 65K colors, 128 x 128 pixels, 2nd Display

Data: Proprietary Operating System

Connectivity: USB 1.1

Web Browser: WAP 2.0/xHTML

Music: MP3 player (iMelody, MIDI, MP3, AMR formats), FM recorder for alarm signal only

Camera: None

Messaging: SMS, MMS, Predictive text

Expansion Slot: microSD (TransFlash), up to 2 GB supported

Tones: Polyphonic, Vibration

Other Features: 7 African languages, Calculator, Calendar

Battery: BQ50 940 mAh, 450 hours standby time, 9 hours talk time

PROS: The W270 benefits from its nice and sleek design. The long battery life of this unit more than makes up for its tiny screen. The Built in MP3 player works like a charm as well and is a nice and welcome addition. The 256 mega bytes of bundled memory is more than what the competition offers. Predictive text capability saves time when writing text messages on the go. The cheap price of the W270 is very attractive and may be one of the factors in the W270's success.

CONS: MP3 playback as ring tone is not supported.

Overall: Whatever the Motorola detractors may say, the W270 does not fail to deliver when it comes to fulfilling its purposes. Let us face it, not everyone needs the wizardry that smart phones have to offer. The Motorola W270 is an attractive option for those looking for a mobile phone to be used mainly for voice calls and text messages. After all, the FM radio and MP3 player may be thought of as just an added bonus. Motorola definitely knows its market.

The Motorola ROKR E8 is also known as Moto ROKR E8. It is a GSM or GPRS camera phone that has easy to use controls, which allow a quick transition from the phone to an MP3 player and to an imaging device.

This phone has an interesting backlight touch keyboard, a two-megapixel camera with 262K-color display using QVGA, 2 GB of micro SD memory card, and an internal memory of 2 GB. The MOTO ROKR E8 also has a 3.5 mm jack for headphones and an FM radio. The navigation device of this phone is called ‘the Omega Wheel”. The Omega Wheel is used for menu navigation and for music. The phone is also equipped with controls that give the user a vibration feedback whenever a particular key is pressed.

Motorola designed this phone to make the life of consumers easy and satisfying. The company used a ModeShift technological breakthrough that is only from Motorola. The "quad band" GPRS or EDGE device in the Motorola ROKR E8 presents consumers or users with the controls that they need. This makes the transition from phone to music player to imaging device as simple as a touch of a button.

The user can just place their thumb across the "Fast Scroll Navigation Wheel" in order to search for music, contacts, calendar and multimedia. Searching for sounds is for music mode and the phone mode is for contacts and calendar searches, while under the imaging mode are multimedia searches. This phone is truly a blend of science and the arts.

Motorola ROKR E8 has a sleek face that has a seamless panel. This phone features the very first "Haptic Touch Pad" which is only done by Motorola. As written above, the haptic touch pad gives the user a warning every time they press or touch any virtual button. It produces a feedback in the form of vibration.

The ROKR E8 is really intended for music that is why this phone enables the ultimate freedom of the user to download songs fro a lot of sources. It is also well suited with the typical soft wares, connectors and accessories. This phone is compatible with Windows Media Player version 11 on the Persona Computer. This allows the user to transfer their favorite sons and videos onto their cellular phone. This device also has access to more than 250 music stores online and the drag-and-drop technique of organizing the songs albums, artists, genres and the playlists itself. Downloading and discovering the latest music has never been this easy! This is don with the E8's FM Radio. This built-in radio has a Song ID that displays and distinguishes “tune information”. This so-called “tune information” is dependent upon its network or SIM card and is not available in other areas. You can share music with friends over the speaker and the stereo Bluetooth technology.

The Moto ROKR E8 supports the Bluetooth AVRCP and A2DP profiles. To use the Bluetooth devices properly in order to share files, the users must have the same profile in their Bluetooth device. Visit the official Motorola website to determine which profiles are supported by Motorola. Some Bluetooth features including the ones listed above can also be unsupported by all the compatible Bluetooth-enabled devices. There may also be cases wherein the functionality of a certain feature is limited in certain cellular phones or devices and/or even the user's wireless carrier. When this problem occurs, contact the wireless carrier that you're using and ask about the feature's functionality and availability.

There are a lot of mobile phones being featured in the market every month. Perhaps, the cell phone industry is already the most sought after market when it comes to having the latest and most innovative gadgets in the metro scene.

Motorola is amongst the many mobile brands that come up with a new and high tech device from time to time. The latest addition would be the Motorola RIZR Z10.

Motorola RIZR Z10 Specifications

The sound system is very clear. Volume can be adjusted. You can even leave a voice memo. Aside from this, the RIZR Z10 is also capable of game downloads.

For connections to the outside world, there are a few you can choose from. This would be via EDGE, 3G HSDPA, and Bluetooth with A2DP; along with GPRS and mini USB. The internet would be through XHTML and WAP.

If you will be bringing this when you travel, it should not pose a problem. This is because of its quad band feature. It can cover up to 4 GSM networks through HSDPA. The RIZR Z10 also comes with a handsfree speaker.

Cons: There hasn't been any negative remark about the Motorola RIZR Z10. The only comment was to have it in a different color. Instead of the usual glossy black case, ladies are requesting to have it in red or pink. For its video calling feature, you can only use it if the party you are calling also has that video calling feature.

Overall: The Motorola RIZR Z10 is a great mobile. This cell phone is not only designed to cater to the younger generation, it is more inclined to those in the business field as well. The equipped advanced technology of this mobile, allows you to experience the conveniences that goes with it.

Motorola has recently unveiled a new entry level mobile phone specifically targeted towards the Indian market – the Motorola W230. The W230 is part of Motorola's MotoYuva series, which highlights music capabilities more than anything else. It therefore comes with a pre-installed memory card worth 256 megabytes. It's quite the far stretch from the usual 10 Mb that ships with most mobile phones with more features than this one, which is a pleasant surprise. What's more, it is expandable to up to 2 Gigs that is enough for more or less 500 songs, should one choose to purchase and upgrade.

The model W230 tends to mislead people into thinking this is a Walkman phone though. And not only that, the MotoYuva series name sounds too similar with Muvo, Creative's forerunner in the media player rat race. Maybe it was intentional on Motorola's part as to insist upon the W230's music functionality.

Too bad also that all that power in the W230 does not translate in its design. It looks uninteresting and will not grab your attention once lined up with its competitors atop your favorite mobile phone dealer's shelf. Even the interchangeable face plates can not save the W230 form design dullness.

Motorola W230 Display

The Motorola W230, being a music phone first and foremost, seems like the developers never bothered trying to cram a camera inside their candy bar handset. This may be fine with some, but considering that most of its competitors are boasting of music playback with camera functions, the W230 is surely a disappointment. Had they included a camera, the design would have probably been forgivable.

The display on the W230 is nothing to sing about either. It is smaller than most at just 1.6 inches and with a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels. Aside from that, not much can be said about its display except that more than anything, it does serve its purpose. At least the screen does not freeze.

Motorola W230 Design and Accessories

Now, with the dull design and absence of the camera aside, the W230 does pull out some punches with regards to its other features. Most apparent of course is its music playback capabilities. It comes with its own music playback application and its supplied memory can host a decent amount of songs. Extending the phone's memory for another 2 gigs via its microSD slot can make room for about 500 tracks more. For that alone, the W230 is a worthy purchase for the music-loving buyers, especially when considering the W230's pocket-friendly price. It is also equipped with a stereo headset and a USB cable for transferring your music files from the computer to the phone. Aside from the simplicity of its computer to phone connectivity, the Motorola W230 is also compatible with the familiar Windows Media Player 11 and above, and this enables the user to transfer music files directly to the phone, without fiddling for hours with proprietary file transfer programs. Motorola also placed dedicated music keys to the W230 for quick access to its built-in music player.

Aside from the wonderful experience of listening to music on the W230, the user may also have an amazing experience listening to a friend's voice on the other line. Thanks mainly to Motorola's CrystalTalk technology which enables clean and sharp sounds even when using the phone in noisy environments.

Another big plus considering the price of the W230 is the ability to access and surf the web with just one click, utilizing the now standard WAP 2.0 and xHTML technologies. Other features that make the W230 worth the purchase include the currency converter, calendar and even reminder and calculator. Also, as this is targeted towards the Indian market, the W230 boasts of Hinglish Predictive Texting and Indian wallpapers. Plus, with a fully charged battery, you are surely to enjoy the features of the W230 for a long time.

PROS: For a budget phone of its size, the Motorola W230 does come with a lot of pros. One may be impressed right away with its included 256 Mb of memory instead of the popular 10 Mb that come packaged with most phones. The compatibility with Windows Media Player 11 and above may also be a source of good cheer for many who are still figuring out how to transfer music to their mobile phones. Browsing the Web is also decent and you may do more so with the supplied Li-Ion battery, which promises long hours of talk and standby time.

CONS: A possible common gripe with the W230 may be the lack of a camera. Although this might be fine with some, it does throw you off considering that you can purchase a camera phone with music capabilities for about the same price. Another source of dissatisfaction is the dull and uninspiring design of the W230.

Overall: The Motorola W230 is overall a well rounded package especially when considering its cheap price. It does what it does with great ability so that it makes up for whatever it lacks.
