Released in November 2009, the LG GW620 is the first of its kind. Also widely known as the LG Eve, LG came out with its first android phone in an already crazy cell phone market. A beauty in its own, the phone has gained a lot of publicity right after its launch. With the consumer's ever increasing appetite for social networking, the company got off with its new venture at the nick of time.

Design and Dimension

106 x 55 x 12 mm- that is what the GW620 measures to. Weighing around 139 g, this phone comes quite handy. Good to look at, it features a slide on QWERTY keypad and a 3.0 inches touch screen that scores high on one's requirements. It's sturdy and also easily fits the hand. With curved edges and a black blue color compilation, it grades high in appearance and presentation.

Camera

The GW620 has a 5 mega pixel camera that speaks for its quality. With 2560 x 1920 pixels, and primary autofocus, images are quite good. It features a LED flash too. Though there is no secondary camera, QVGA videos is supported. Some of the important features like Beauty shot, face detection and Geo tagging is also available along with Image stabilizer.

Basic features

Though not irresistible, the GW620 has some impeccable qualities that cannot be denied. The phone was majorly built with the social networking strata in view. It offers some integrated entertainment packages, and a comfortable keypad ensures user satisfaction. Good camera, new interface and fast web browsers add on to its appeal.

Interface: The handset originally runs the Android 1.5 Cupcake operating system. Though the interface is a bit old drawn, it can be upgraded to the Android 2.1 Éclair. The OS is quite prompt and responsive. Due to the standard resolution of the phone, most of the applications available for Android phones are supported. It consists of basic interface features like home screen and widgets that have been customized by the company.

Phonebook: Some 1000 contacts can be stored in the phone. However, multiple numbers under a single contact name is not supported.

Screen

The phone features graphical display in the 3.0 inch screen. With a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels, it is not harsh on eyes. The touch screen is resistive and obviously not as good as its capacitive counterparts. Due to the light sensitive display, the screen is quite visible in sunlight. The 256K colors and 65k effective colors bring the screen to life. It also comes with an accelerometer sensor.

Keypad and Controls

Beneath the 3.0 inch display are three buttons- Menu, Home and Back. These three are also touch sensitive. On sliding, the full QWERTY keypad comes to view. The five row keypad is more or less like the PC keyboard and properly spaced. The keys are well responsive. The micro USB port is on the left side along with volume rocker. The micro SD card slot is on the right and so are the music and camera keys. On top perches the 3.5 mm audio jack.

Audio

Well endowed speakerphones are available in the phone for music lovers. It comes with a MP4 player and also supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, EAAC+ and WMA. A built in FM Radio and a 3.5 mm audio jack is also offered. The sound quality is good and the phone can also be used as a PMP.

Messaging

The phone offers threaded message viewing for the ease of text savvies. The QWERTY keypad adds on to the comfort due to the well separated keys. There are arrows that make scrolling easier. It comes with all the basic features- MMS, Instant Messaging, Email and Push Email.

Media

The media factor in the LG GW620 is as per necessity. The media player is apt for playing video files. The standard music player comes with basic features, and the interface is user friendly. The image gallery application is superb and allows 3D image viewing. Photos can be shared through MySpace, Picasa or via MMS. The camera is also decent.

Internet

The GW620 is equipped with 2G as well as 3G networking ability. The HSDPA works at 7.2 Mbps. The phone is appropriate for internet usage, thanks to the quality keypad and supportive OS. Social networking has been made easy and a WAP 2.0 browser makes all the difference.

Storage

The Smartphone has 150 MB internal memory. It has a micro SD slot, and the external memory is expandable up to 32 GB.

Connectivity and Data

Connectivity is commendable in terms of options available. EDGE, GPRS, 3G HSDPA, and Wi-Fi are all there for the users. Along with it, a micro USB 2.0 is supplied and Bluetooth 2.0 is used to connect to other phones. Though Flash is not supported, it comes with a standard Webkit browser. The built in GPS supports Google Maps already installed in the phone. With all the other accessories, connectivity is not to be a problem.

Usability and Performance

The device can be called versatile. Usage is uncomplicated and easy and makes up for all basic features that a general phone has nowadays. It supports photo call and the quality of call reception is laudable. Decent image quality, image editor, basic document viewer and motion based games- all makes this phone a great choice.

The GW620 is good for a start, but if you're looking for something more, you may want to check out other options.

Sometimes the brand name is just enough for the customers. Any new handset in the market from their house gets the publicity required, and thus gets swept up in a jiffy. Quality and reliability is the key word. Latest on the list is the Nokia 5730 Xpressmusic.

Somewhat similar to the 5630 except for the slide out QWERTY keypad, the handset took the followers by surprise as it is the first music edition phone with a QWERTY keypad. It is a fully music optimized and bequeathed with dedicated gaming keys. The phone is just apt for the music frenzies and text savvies.

Design and Dimension

This new end phone is a look alike of the normal music edition Nokia phones. The length has been extended with a provision for QWERTY keypad. However the plastic built is not much of a catch. It weighs some 135 g and features a 2.4 inches display. The general dimension is 112 x 51 x 15.4 mm.

Camera

The 5730 Xpress Music is laden with a 3.15 mega pixel camera. The camera is not over the top, but gives decent quality pictures. The 2048 x 1536 pixels automatically boosts the performance. The optics has been put in from Carl Zeiss. The camera comes with basic features such as autofocus. A LED flash helps in lighting up the image.

Basic Features

Nokia 5730 is a complete package Smartphone on the line. Aimed for the younger throng, the phone justifies its features. Beginning with the general features available in every phone, the handset is loaded with integrated facets and works well too. The software has also been upgraded from previous 5630 model.

Interface: 5730 Xpress Music runs on a Symbian operating system. The 9.3 version comes with the 3rd edition user interface of S60. It has the Feature Pack 2. However, few changes have been incorporated to facilitate ease of usage. One of the changes is a new contact bar for the standby screen. This new feature makes the screen more interactive because of contact pictures and RSS feeds. Certain graphics such as animated phone browsing also accompanies the Feature Pack 2.

Phonebook: Like all Symbian handsets, the Nokia 5730 also features unlimited contacts storage capacity virtually. The contacts can also be easily edited as per requirements and even new fields can be added. Saving a contact name is done by the first or the last name and can be searched by the same. Groups can be created, and synchronization is also easier.

Screen

The Nokia 5730 Xpressmusic has the display tilting in its favor. The phone has a decent 2.4 inches QVGA screen. With a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels, the display is quite appropriate. The 16M colors are highly vibrant. Brightness of the screen is adjustable and doesn't hurt the eyes. The contrast is also quite good. The sunlight legibility makes sure the display is not washed away by the sunshine and remains immensely readable. Though a 2.4 inches screen is enough, a little larger would have done no harm.

Keypad and Controls

The handset is utterly well balanced, and takes care of the messaging folks extra especially. The numpad serves its purpose dedicatedly. Marked by digital style digits, it shows off a great deal. The keys are easy and good and don't have problems like the previous models. The show stealer is the QWERTY keypad. It is spread out in four rows and makes proper use of the space. The keys are well spread and writing tools are easier to access. Typing on this phone is really top notch.

Audio

It goes without saying that an Xpress music handset will deliver nothing but quality sound features. So the audio quality is just as expected. The dedicated music keys add on to the music experience. It supports many audio formats such as MP3, AAC, WMA and eAAC+. Obviously music can also be played in the background. Though the equalizer is preset with five elements, new ones can be edited or created. The Say and Play feature is also quite welcoming.

Messaging

Symbian is a great software that supports messaging like nothing else. Teamed with a user friendly keypad, texting couldn't be easier. It supports SMS, email and MMS as they are the climbing rungs.

There is a separate editor for SMS and audio messages. Basic features like delivery report are there and converting a SMS to a MMS is also quite neat. You can even listen to your emails using the message reader.

Media

The available multimedia options are meant to improve the phone's features. The homescreen is commendable. Through it, direct access can be gained to the applications like N Gage, Facebook, Maps, Ovi contacts, messaging, photos etc. dedicated gaming and music keys are also praiseworthy.

Internet

Nokia Smartphones are always good when it comes to web browsing. Pages open up with great ease and scrolling through them is easier. The RAM boosts the performance of the browser and multi tasking capability makes this phone even better. The browser supports Java and Flash, and zooming options are also made available.

Storage

The internal storage memory is f 100 MB with a 128 MB RAM. It comes with a micro SD slot and the external memory is expandable up to 16 GB. Call records are also stored for maximum 30 days.

Connectivity and Data

The Smartphone has numerous connectivity and data transfer options. Basic ones like USB 2.0 and A2DP Bluetooth 2.0 are supported along with HSDPA that supports 3.6 Mbps RAM. As the icing on the cake, Wi-Fi is also supported.

Usability and Performance

The handset meets all the primary requirements. The organizer and applications are quite functional and have good managerial skills. The mobile office is also supportive and editing features are common. It is not expected to be top notch, but stays true to its promise.

Camera performance average

Poor battery life

Monotonous design

Screen size not adequate

Conclusion

The Nokia 5730 Xpressmusic is elaborate in details. However, the big talks about the audio quality are rather hollow and the Symbian OS needs to take a break. Otherwise it is loaded with the available technologies and though out of the league, the price is highly competitive.

If it is a phone you want with a top notch camera, the LG KC910 Renoir will not disappoint you. Announced in August 2008, the phone is available in the market since November 2008. LG has always made it a point to incorporate the latest technology and make the handsets feature-filled.

Similarly, for KC910 Renoir, they left no stone unturned. It has the newest connectivity technology and champs the world of camera phones. Along with the attractive display feature, KC910 Renoir is a high flier.

Design and Dimension

The slight mirror finish rendered to the phone adds on to the glamour quotient. It is of the slate form factor. Somewhat similar looking to an iPhone, the 3.0 inch touch screen makes the most of the front panel. It weighs 114 g and the dimension is 107.8 x 55.9 x 14 mm. The Renoir looks great, but is not counted on the slender genre.

Camera

If asked to score for the Renoir camera, one would rate it at nothing less than 8 out of 10. The 8 Mega Pixel camera does all the talking. The 3264 x 2448 pixels increases the image quality. Along with it, the new features are pretty interesting. One of them is the touchscreen focus. With it, if you want to focus at a particular object, you can do that just by pointing at the screen. Other than that, there is the blink detection feature which works just as well. The face tracking focus is also there. The DivX 5 video codec is used for video recording.

Basic Features

LG Renoir has an upgraded task manager. Compared to the LG Viewty and LG KF700, KC910 Renoir is much more moldable.

User Interface: The LG operating system works quite well. The user interface has been upgraded from the previous handsets. Though a bit slow, the interface has incorporated lots of animations. The main menu can be reorganized, and the icons can be interchanged. Scrolling is also much easier and smoother and each touch is accompanied by vibration. The home screen widgets have been updated and the Status screen is also installed.

Phonebook: Photo calling is possible in the Renoir, and video calling can also be done.

Screen

KC910 Renoir is blessed with a large 3.0 inches display. Screen of all LG phones always define class. So does the Renoir. The TFT touch screen is resistive. However, overall functioning it is not as difficult and is as good as the capacitive ones. It has a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels and 256K colors. Flash user interface is incorporated and accelerometer sensor is used for auto rotation. Wallpapers can be downloaded and applied.

Keypad and Controls

The touchscreen features a full QWERTY keypad. Due to the touch screen, the keypad is also easy to handle. Longitudinal view of the QWERTY keypad is also available. Beneath the 3.0 touch screen, there are three controls buttons each for receiving and ending calls and to open the application launcher. Above the display, there is the video call camera and ambient light sensor. On the right, there are two controls for the camera. The camera lens cover is manually controlled.

Audio

The speakerphone installed in the handset is quite powerful. The Renoir boasts of Dolby sound which acts on its favor. The Dolby for Mobile is not applicable on videos. The music player is not over the top, and there are no equalizer settings available. The Dolby sound enhancer acts at a single click to improve the sound quality.

Messaging

Messaging is quite easy if you are used to the touch screen keypad. Even if you are not, no difficulties are expected to arise. The touchpad is prompt. All the primary messaging features are available. SMS, MMS, EMS and Email facilities are provided.

Media

Image viewing, media player, video playback, gaming, picture editing and lots more are brought together with maximum efficiency in this handset. The screen is so fluid that flipping through images is more than natural. The image editor is excellent and feature filled. The latest one is the Face Beauty option. It brightens portraits and repairs blemishes. The Smart Light feature is also quite useful.

The music player is average, but the video support is too good. The LG Renoir could easily play the DivX files that were not played in the other smart-end phones. The large screen makes it comfortable for playing games.

Internet

Though the Safari browser was excellent, the web browser in LG Renoir is not far behind. The fluid feel has been inherited. The web pages are loaded pretty fast. The pages are also cached. However the only glitch is the zoom option. It is not quite accurate, and sometimes fails to enlarge the section of the page selected. To zoom an object, it is to be pressed and held together.

Storage

Like any other standard phone, the internal memory is 100 MB. Call records can register up to 40 dialed calls, 40 missed calls and 40 received calls. The external memory slot can support external memory up to 16 GB.

Connectivity and Data

The LG KC910 Renoir uses some of the latest connectivity technologies. It is a 3G enabled handset with the HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps. GPS technology is enabled. Then there is the Wi-Fi feature. Though there is no infrared port, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP allows data transfer. There is also a USB port.

Usability and Performance

The Renoir is rich in multimedia capabilities. The design is conservative, yet sharp enough. Good care needs to be taken for this phone. Performance is laudable, so is durability.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz is the latest adition to Sony’s family of communication and entertainment devices. ‘Vivaz’ is a Portuguese term that means spirited which certainly has been the force influncing the design of this phone. It looks very lively and attractive. And not just looks Vivaz excels in its specifications too.

Design, Dimensions

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz is an elegantly styled sleek phone with a smooth and rounded finish. This makes the model good to look at. The size of the device is significantly small which makes it pocket friendly.

Its dimensions are 107x51.7x12.5mm and it weighs about 97g. It has a 4.2 inches resistive touchscreen. The phone is available in attractive colors- Silver Moon, Cosmic Black, Galaxy Blue, Ruby and Venus.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz Camera

The camera is one of the best features of this phone. The 8.1MP camera sets the standard real high. It takes snaps in 6 resolutions which includes two wide resolutions and two quality settings. It also comes with 4 color effects, a self timer, 4 white balance options, a digital zoom, image stabilizer, multishot and night mode amongst other features. Geotagging is also available.

Basic Features

The Vivaz is a great phone that has a host of useful features including a 3.2inches TFT screen, 8.1MP camera, great media elements, decent connectivity options, decent call quality and not to forget great looks.

Interface: The Sony Ericsson Vivaz runs on the Symbian operating system. The menu is easily laid out and navigation is easy. There is only one menu screen but thre are several sub-menu options. If the home screen is customised then one can avoid venturing into the menu each time.

Phone Book: The phone book capacity of Vivaz is limited by the size of the internal memory, which should give users a lot of space. Every contact can hold multiple fields which include phone numbers, email address, street address, job description etc. Photos and ringtones can be associated with each contact.

Screen

The front portion of Vivaz is dominated by the 3.2 inches display. The touchscreen though not very large is decent enough. It supports up to 16.7 millon colors and has a pixel resolution of 640x320pixels. The TFT screen is a resistive screen which means one needs to apply pressure in order to get the commands executed. The stylus offers a one of a kind experience.

Keypad and Controls

The Vivaz offers a virtual keypad to facilitate texting and emails. It also comes with a handwriting recognotion mechanism - pretty accurate. The onscreen keypad is fast and also relatively easy to use. The individual buttons are large and to insert numbers or symbols one needs to move to other pages.

Audio

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz comes with a music player that is much better than those present in its predeccesor. All the traditional options like artists, albums, playlists, etc are available on the player. The music quality is reasonably good, however use of the headset offers a better experience. The standard FM is also available on the phone. A wired antenna is required though.

Messaging

The phone comes with numerous messaging menu from the regular SMS to email inbox to a threaded message. Setting up email on the Vivaz is pretty easy. Also, setting up Exchange Mail was simple and doesn’t take very long to synchronize with the server. Push mail however is not configured by default and the inbox needs to be refreshed every time you open your inbox. Also, the onscreen QWERTY keypad is easier to use on the landscaped mode.

Media

Sony Ericsson has had a good track record of great music phones and Vivaz is no exception. The Vivaz has a walkman music player. It offers a slick interface with animated background. The monochrome player also hosts a number of options which include artists, albums, playlists, audiobooks and podcasts.

It is also simple to create playlists on the fly. There is a widget on the home screen that lets you remain updated with the track names and also offers quick access. The media player offers an easy switch over facility to video playback or the photo gallery as it is all part of the same application.

Internet

The Vivaz offers a good Browsing experience. It is easy to switch between the 3G network connectivity and the WiFi. Browsing the web over the SIM card data connection offeres a mixed experience-sometimes the web pages loads fast but other times they may even take up a minute to load. WiFi although a tad slower is consistent. Zoom-in option allows users to zoom into the page. Another useful function is the ‘find’ function that lets people find the relevant content on the web page. However vivaz is not flash compatible.

Storage

The onboard memory of the phone is around 75MB. However, it possesses a microSD card slot that can support up to 32 GB expansion.

Connectivity and Data

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz is a quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) phone. It features the stereo Bluetooth, A2DP support and a microUSB connectivity. Support for WiFi and EDGE technologies is also provided.

Usability & Performance

The Vivaz performs well enough in all aspects. It has a decent call quality. The signal remains stedy and strong and the audio is clear on both ends. No counter interference is experienced from other devices. However, speaker phone calls are not as clear as voice gets distorted at higher volumes. The same goes for automated calling systems. The Vivaz comes with a 720MHz processor. Although this isn’t too bad but according to observations the phone’s performance is a little sluggish that is, it takes some time to execute certain commands. It offers a battery life of 5 hours which includes 20 minutes 3G talktime and 13 hours EDGE talktime.

HTC's EVO 4G packs in all that anyone can dream of. 4G connectivity, HD camcorder, camera for video chatting, and especially the multiuser mobile hotspot capabilities are EVO's pride - features that high end phones will emulate in future. However, this is not expected anytime soon. Till then EVO would rule. Although it may not be the best android phone available currently, it is a solid phone with great hardware features that runs on the Android.

Design, Dimensions

The Evo 4G is quite big in size. It is taller as it is wider than the iPhone. However it is quite sleek and is comfortable to hold in ones hand. Under the 4.3 inches display lies the touch sensitive buttons. The EVO features the kickstand that makes watching videos on the device in landscape mode enjoyable. Its dimensions are 4.80 x 2.60 x 0.50 inches.

Camera

The HTC EVO has an 8megapixel camera which is great to use and provides quality photos. When the camera mode is on it automatically starts reacting to the environment but focussing and adjusting exposure is necessary. This means on touching the scren the picture is taken almost immediately. Its dual LED flash allows photos to be taken even in a dark room.

Basic Features

The HTC EVO sports a huge 4.3 inches display that dominates the front part. It is the first phone in the US to support 4G network connectivity. This facilitates better video streaming, faster data transfers, and a video camera for video calls. Also , it runs on the latest version of Android. On top of it, it has the HTC Sense UI.

Interface: The EVO runs on the Android 2.1 and by default offers 7 home screens. On swiping to the right one can find a Sprite screeen with shortcuts to applications like Sprint Navigtor, Sprint TV, web bookmarks and a Friend stream. On the left of the main screen one can find the Favourite widget for quickly contacting ones friends and family. All of these elements can be moved around.

Phone Book: The phone book capacity depends on the system memory. The phone book can be searched by first name and last name. Multiple contact numbers can be assigned to a contact and caller groups can also be created.

Screen

The EVO has a 4.3 inches display. The screen is bright and crisp. This WVGA display which is significantly larger than most mobile phones has a pixel resolution of 400 x 800 pixels. The colors look rich and vibrant on the phone. As far as the touchscreen is concerned it is very responsive.

Keypad and Controls

The HTC EVO 4G lacks a physical keypad and possesses a virtual one. As the screen is quite large , the virtual keyboard is much easier to use on the EVO than in other phones.

The power button and the headphone jack lies on the top of the phone. On the top right side one can find the long narrow volume buttons.

Audio

The music player in the EVO is amazing. The external speakers also produce very loud and clear sound. Headphones also provide even better sound. AAC and MP3 file formats are supported for playback. An FM radio application is also present in the phone.

Messaging

Creating a Google and Yahoo account in the EVO is a breeze. It is also quite amazing to see that it allows easy viewing and searching ones inbox. However it would be helpful if the notification drawer indicated the email provider as one might get confused as to which account the mail belongs to. Instant messengers work as well in EVO as SMS applications.

Media

The media elements in the EVO are really great. There is so much for one to do that it often becomes difficult to decide. There is the mobile video, games, music player and web browsing too.

For the social metworking freaks the Peep and Facebook are included. For the game lovers the Teeter game is a good one. The music player is pretty good and it has great external speakers.

Internet

The EVO offers a great web browsing experience specially with the 4G connectivity. The web pages land almost immediately even if there are a lot of ads. Another benefit of using the 4G is one can be on a call while surfing the net. Even if one is connected to the web through the Wifi this facility is available.

Storage

The device comes with a microSD slot and its memory can be expanded considerably.

Connectivity and Data

It also features Bluetooth, A2DP support and a microUSB connectivity. It is also compatible with WiFi technology.

Usability & Performance

As expected the EVO 4G is really fast. One does not have to wait for anything that requires network conectivity. The android 2.1 along with HTC Sense UI is a great combination offered in EVO. Its pinch-to-zoom gesture is also intersting.

Responses to call quality is somewhat mixed. Indoor results were certainly better, but when ouside there could be a little problem with the background sounds.

Conclusion

The HTC Evo 4G is an impressive phone but it is not perfect. It has a stunning display and offers a decent call quality. It has great specifications-all that a power user would want but unfortunately it comes with a grave drawback in the form of a short battery life.

For a long time Nokia has been making phones that do not really score as the best phones in the market. The Nokia 6790 Surge aims to be a device that aims to focus on the messaging and other features of a smartphone. This QWERTY sporting smartphone is ideal for those who are not in a position to pay the hefty bills Apple or HTC phones demand. Equipped with great features the surge is surely a good option that one can check out.

Design, Dimensions

The Nokia Surge is quite a small phone. Its dimensions are 97.5 x 57.9 x 15.5 mm. The phone is compact in size and weighs about 4.3 ounces. The phone has a glossy appearance and a plasticky kind of feel that attracts finger prints leaving one feeling that the material is of an inferior quality. The phone is wider than most sliding phones in the market. It comes with a 2.4 inches QVGA display screen -clear and bright.

Camera

The Surge has a 2MP camera that produces good detailing. It has 4x digital zoom and there is no muddy experience when it is zoomed. However the color quality is not as good. Photos can be captured in either 640 x 480 or 1600 x 1200 resolution. Options like white balance are also available. The picture quality is decent.

Basic Features

The Nokia Surge comes with a 2.4 inches QVGA display screen , a slide out QWERTY keypad with an embedded numeric keypad, a 2MP camera, music player, stereo Bluetooth and 3G connectivity.

Interface: The Surge is powered by Nokia’s S60 3rd Edition which comes with attractive menu transitions and a handful of updates. The S60 Feature Pack 2 users have the option of using any one out of the three standby screen layouts. The surge can be customised in several ways. Icons and background can abe played with by changing themes. Also the main menu can be displayed in a horseshoe or V-shaped carousel mode or a list of icons.

Phone Book: The phone book can store up to 1000 contacts. Any number of information can be stored for a given contact which includes birthdays, physical mailing address, email, jod profile and many more things.

Nokia 6790 Surge Screen

The 2.4 inches display screen dominates the front part of the Surge. The QVGA display supports 16million colors and has a pixel resolution of 240x320 pixels. However, it does not look as sharp as expected. Moreover if the brightness is increased it makes viewing the screen in sunlight difficult.

Keypad and Controls

On sliding the QWERTY keyboad the display screen automatically rotates to the landscape mode. There are 4 rows of buttons on the keypad. The shape of each button is a slightly elongated rectangle with tapered edges. The buttons have a tactile click and this is one of the best keypads ever used. As there are no directional buttons on the keypad which means one must reach up to use the d-pad. A standard numeric keypad is also embedded in the centre of the QWERTY keyboard.

Audio

The MP3 music player in the Surge offers options like equalizer settings and visualizations. It displays the artist, album, track name and the time left. The sound quality from the speaker phone is dismal and when it was placed in the loudest volume crackling noises are heard. Even after altering the equalizer settings to ‘bass booster’ the performance does not improve.

Messaging

The Nokia 6790 offers support for both SMS and MMS. However it does not display messages in threaded format which makes it difficult to track conversations. Instant messaging application is also included in the phone which enables users to log into their Yahoo Messenger account, AIM, Windows Live Messenger easy.

Media

The music player in the Nokia Surge allows users to browse their library by artist, album, genre. It even allows creation and management of playlists on the device directly. One can also choose to shuffle or repeat the music and also adjust the audio with a graphic equalizer.

The reverse, pause/play and forward icons correspond to the navigational pad. Video playback powered by ReadPlayer produces some great results with the videos viewed. Videos can be played either in MPEG4 orientation or H.264 320x136 and it takes two seconds to switch views. The Surge performs decently in this field.

It also includes demo versions of popular games like Guitar Hero, Asphalt 4 and Monopoly Here and Now.

Internet

The Surge offers a fairly decent web browsing experience. It is somewhat sluggish and complex pages take a little bit of time to load. Users are advised to allow a site to download completely before venturing off else that may lead to further slowdown of the device. A page view option displays the entire site and allows quick scroll down. Though Flash is supported it is not properly implemented and when viewing YouTube videos a considerable slowdown occurs.

Storage

The internal memory of the phone is 128 MB but it can be expanded to 8GB via the microSD card slot.

Connectivity and Data

The Nokia Surge is a quad-band GSM phone that supports GSM 850/900/1800/1900. It also features Bluetooth, A2DP support and a microUSB connectivity. It is fully compatible with GPRS and EDGE technologies.

Usability & Performance

The call quality of the Nokia Surge was average. The voice of callers sometimes sounded muffled and at times dead silence was experienced during converstions. The speaker also makes a crackling noise. Something that is really annoying is having to open up the QWERTY keypad while dialing numbers.

The battery is rated for 5 hours of talktime and 400 standby hours.

Conclusion

Although the Nokia Surge is equipped with one of the best keypads its confused design and lackluster interface leave a sour taste in the mouth. However this phone is ideal for social networking freaks. Although the build material feels a little flimsy the handset is actually well built with a slide mechanism. The phone is also equipped with plenty of onboard memory and internal storage facility. Overall, the Nokia Surge is a great phone.

The display dominates the front part of the phone and there are three buttons namely menu, home and back beneath the screen. A little LED glows in between the front buttons whenever the phone is in use.

The player can identify MPEG 4 videos that are coded in H.264. However it does not support DivX and Xvid. The WVGA resolution offers a great viewing experience. The video can be watched in either the landscape or the portarit mode.

Internet

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 comes with the standard Android OS 1.6 web browser capable of rendering even the most complicated of web pages. The 1Ghz processor of the phone facilitates smooth scrolling and zooming making the web browsing experience really enjoyable. Although Flash is not supported by the device the fast YouTubebrowser more than makes up for this deficiency. The device features an application suite for synchronization of the various segments of MS outlook. The Moxie Mail is the most interesting among them. The standard email applications can be used for POP3 and IMAP email accounts.

Storage

The device has a 348MB RAM and a 1GB storage.

The Samsung Intrepid SPH-i350 made its foray into the market as Sprint's first Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone. Intrepid is Samsung's follow up to the Samsung Ace. However, it is an upgraded version of its predeccesor having being blessed with a touchscreen, a larger QWERTY keypad, a great camera and Windows Mobile 6.5. The phone does well as a messaging device and can surely serve as an alternative to the Tour if one desires a touchscreen phone.

Design, Dimensions

The Samsung Intrepid is larger than the Ace and also feels much lighter. The dimensions of the device are 4.88 x 2.44 x 0.53 inches and it weighs about 91 grams. It is also wide thereby offering more space for the keyboard. The keys are also larger than in the Ace which facilitates ease in typing.

The standard navigational cluster is present on the top of the keyboard. The navigation keys are a little hard to use as they are very close to each other. The front portion of the phone is dominated by the 2.5inches QVGA display. As the back of the phone is not textured it tends to slip out of hand.

Camera

The Intrepid comes with a 3.2MP camera and camcorder that can be used to capture special moments. The outdoor photos are sharp and detailed but the colors do not appear as good. Although the photograps appear quite decent fancy things cannot be expected out of the camera that does not offer zoom features.

Basic Features

The Intrepid SPH i350 offers a host of features which include a 2.5 inches touchscreen, QWERTY keypad, MP3 player, stereo Bluetooth, Windows Mobile 6.5 OS and many more. A feature that deserves special mention is the TellMe voice recognition applcation. It opens up a web page if the user throws up a search term. It also connects calls to people when directed by voice.

Interface: The Samsung SPH-i350 Intrepid runs on the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. It offers a great visual overhaul that starts with the homescreen featuring a list of items like messaging, calendar, multimedia and Internet explorer among others. Also the start menu has been altered. It cannow be customised according to the user preference.

Phone Book: The phone book capacity depends on the system memory. Multiple numbers can be assigned to each contacts. Besides, the contacts can also be assigned ring IDs and picture IDs.

Screen

The 2.5 inches display screen is one of the best features of the phone. It has a pixel resolution of 320x240 pixels but the pictures are comparatively sharper and clearer than what similar resolution usually offers. The touchscreen is quite responsive and accurate.

Keypad and Controls

The bottom part of the Intrepid is dominated by the QWERTY keypad. Although it works well but the keys do no not have well defined boundaries requiring users to monitor their fingers as they are texting. The keys are very small and they do make dialing difficult. However, they are easy to read as they are printed in white. But again, the punctuation marks are a little difficult to see as they are in red.

The left side of the phone has a volume rocker and microUSB port. The right hand side features the power/sleep key, a dedicated camera button.

Audio

The Intrepid features an MP3 music player. The files suported are AAC, AAC+, WMA, MIDI. It comes with a dual band CDMA radio as well as a GSM radio. Voacal and speaker quality are pretty decent , crisp and loud. There is a small mono speaker on the handset's back part which generates pristine sound for ambient music listening experience.

Messaging

The Intrepid supports all forms of communication namely SMS,MMS, POP, IMAP and Microsoft Exchange. The threaded message feature is also there. Email feature is really good as creating accounts is pretty easy and convenient. The email client also keeps different accounts well organized. Instant messengers are also supported which include AOL, windows Live, Yahoo Messenger.

Media

The Intrepid uses the mobile version of the Windows Media Player for audio and video. Sprint TV, NFL Mobile, and NASCAR Mobile are also part of the Sprint entertainment package and hence included. The videos look really good. Sound quality on the external speakers is a bit low and using headphones is recommended.

However, the Media player needs a little more updating as the songs do not load properly. Also, Windows Mobile often is unable to locate certain tracks on the memory card as it is not organized well in the library.

Internet

The SPH-i350 offers support for Sprint's 3G network and also WiFi wireless network. Thus there are plenty of options for a speedy Web browsing experience. As it is a Windows Mobile based handset it includes the mobile version of the Internet Explorer and thus offers a fairly good browsing experience. Web pages load quickly and look good too. Support for Flas Lite is also provided.

Storage

It has a 256MB RAM and a 512MB ROM. It comes with a microSD slot that allows memory expansion.

Connectivity and Data

The Intrepid is a GSM Quad-band phone capable of global roaming (850/900/1800/1900 MHz). It also features CDMA dual band (800/1900 MHz) . For data transfer the Intrepid uses the EVDO Rev from Sprint. It features Stereo Bluetooth with A2DP support. It offers support for WiFi and EDGE technologies.

Usability & Performance

The Samsung SPH-i350 Intrepid performs reasonably well. The sound quality of the phone is good. However, the background noises interfere with conversations. The phone's battery offers 6hours of talktime which is a great offering for a CDMA phone. The stand-by time of the battery is also decent.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

Large and bright touchscreen

Good battery life

Decent camera

TellMe works well

Cons:

Keyboard is below average

Performance is average

Hard to grip

Conclusion

There is nothing wrong really with the Samsung Intrepid SPH-i350. However, it doesn't do much to please us. It is more of a ‘middle of the road' kind of device. It serves as a kind of launch pad for the Windows Mobile 6.5 and apart from this it does not offer anything to generate enough interest.

With its slightly above average looks and average performance there is not much reason to go for this phone apart from the attractive price. However, an application that deserves special mention is the TellMe which performs really well.

Motorola Droid X is the latest addition to the series of similarly-equipped smart phones namely HTC EVO 4G, Apple iPhone 4 and the Galaxy S. This offering from Verizon Wireless could easily become the best Android phone around. A 4.3 inches high resolution display, 1Ghz processor, 16GB of storage and an 8 megapixel camera are among the many notable features of the device.

Design, Dimensions

The Droid X is a liitle big in size like the HTC EVO but slightly taller. It has a rubbery back that feels good in hand. The Droid is slimmer than the EVO but is raised in certain areas like the top portion of the phone where the camera lens and flash are located. Its dimensions are 5x2.6x0.4 inches and weighs only about 5.47 ounces.

Camera

The Motorola Droid has an 8megapixel camera with dual-LED flash. It offers a great picture quality. The zoom also works well. Colors come out very well and there are othershooting modes too like sepia and black and white which also work very well. Videos can also be captured in 720p and two modes are available namely slow motion and fast motion modes.

Basic Features

The Droid X is a pocket-sized home theatre with a glorius 4.3 inches display that lets you enjoy your movies and videos. It also has a powerful processor that offers a great speed with applications opening up as soon as they are selected. It makes use of high performance antennas along with some software support that allows improvements in signal strength and reduces dropped calls.

Interface

The Droid runs on the Android 2.1. Widgets for social networking sites, updates, weather forecasts, photo gallery etc are available. Moreover the widgets can be resized and arranged on the screen. Additional widgets can be added on any one of the seven home screens that Android offers.

Screen

The Motorola Droid X has a 4.3inches display that is huge and bright and has a pixel resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. The screen looks wonderful while viewing texts, photos or video. The multitouch display not only offers pinch-to-zoom gesture but also allows two buttons to be pressed at a time. A proximity sensor and an in-built accelerometer helps in changing the screen orientation.

Keypad and Controls

The Droid does not have a physical keyboard. It has a virtual keyboard on the touchscreen. It works well in both landscape and portrait mode, although it looks a little cramped in portrait mode.

The power button and the headphone jack are present on the top of the device. The volume and camera button are present on the right hand side. On the left side of the phone is the charge/sync port and the HDMI port. Below the screen there are 4 buttons -menu, home, back, and search.

Audio

The droid has a built-in media player. The external speakers produce quality sound and the volume is good too. Even at the highest volume there is no distortion and a great sound is produced. By plugging the 3.5mm headset jack one can enjoy the FM radio too. Music applications can also be downloaded from the Android Market.

Motorola phones have the reputation of producing a good sound quality at both ends of the call. Droid X is not an exception.

Messaging

Droid supports SMS, MMS, Email, Push Mail. However there are some glitches in this area. It has been noted that there are some issues like incoming and outgoing messages don't get properly updated in the message queue. Also, message notifications gets delayed.

Media

One look at the Motorola Droid X and you know that it was designed to be a powerhouse of entertainment. There aren't too many media elements apart from he music player, video playe, youTube applications and a demo of the game NFS shift, but these are enough to realize the potential of the device. Watching videos in the YouTube application in the wonderful screen is an amazing experience.

And playing NFS here is silky smooth and it will make one want to purchase the game. Besides a DLNA application is also included to facilitate sharing and streaming of media wirelessly.

Internet

Web browsing is a good expeience. With a 4.3 inches display web browsing is always comfortable. Both Verizon's 3G network connectivity and WiFi loades sites quickly and crisply. The pinch-to-zoom gesture is available here. However, the phone lacks Flash at launch- expexted soon in Android 2.2.

Storage

The Motorola Droid x comes with 8 GB of onboard memory and a 16GB memory card that is pre-installed into the device. The memory is expandable up to 40GB and a 32 GB memory card is also added to store videos, games, photos and the likes.

Connectivity and Data

The Droid X features the Bluetooth 2.1. It also comes with an optional HDMI cable or Digital Living Network Alliance(DLNA) technology to share or stream media with compatible devices.

Usability & Performance

The Droid X is a responsive device that is quick to perform whatever task you need. Applications open almost immediately. However web pages take a little time to open. This is not very surprising because the phone is running on a 1GHz processor(OMAP). The call quality of the phone is also decent. However the tests gave better results outside than in the interiors of a building. Thus, in low coverage areas the call quality is average.

Also, the WiFi works perfectly well and so does the device's 3G wireless hotspot functionality. This feature allows users to share their Net connection with other computers.

Motorola Droid X Phone Specifications

Weight: 155 g

Width: 127.5 mm

When HTC made its foray into the cell phone industry it was mainly manufacturing branded smartphone handsets for different networks like the O2 XDA range and the MDA handsets for T-Mobile. As a result it made a reputation as the producer of smartphone devices. HTC worked in tandem with members of the Open Handset Alliance to bring the Android OS in the market. The HTC Desire is a flagship handset that runs on the Android OS. Two other handsets marketed under the Desire name are the HTC Desire HD and the HTC Desire Z. Let us take a closer look at the HTC Desire Z.

Design and Dimensions

The HTC Desire Z measures 119 X 61 x 14mm and weighs about 180g. It is slightly on the heavier side due to its aluminium casing. It offers a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and also comes with an SLCD display which is 3.7 inches. It looks glorious physically and is quite sleek despite being a QWERTY device. It feels quite solid and has a metallic finish.

Camera

The Desire Z has a 5 megapixel camera supported by an LED flash. It has an autofocus and several other built-in features like digital zoom and geo tagging. The picture quality too is amazing. HD video recording is also added to facilitate recording of superior quality video. Also, DLNA lets you share snaps on YouTube or onto your big screen television.

Basic Features

The Desire Z runs on the Android 2.2, which is Google’s latest edition of mobile operating system. This is probably one of the best Android smartphones of 2010. A QWERTY keyboard present alongside the touchcreen has managed to impress fans immensely. Also, it is great as a messaging phone and offers great online connectivity. The cloud based services offered by HTCSense like remote back-up, phone tracing are also notable.

Interface: The interface responds quickly and works great under touch. So, whether one clicks an icon or perform a swipe the HTC Desire does it without a lag.

HTC Desire Z Screen

The Desire Z has a 3.7 inches touchscreen that is super responsive. It is perfect for web-browsing, catching up on friend’s updates and checking mails. Colors look richer in the superb LCD screen and the contrast ratio too is awe-inspiring. It supports over 16million colors and has a pixel resolution of 480 x 800 pixels.

Keypad and Controls

The QWERTY keypad has a Z hinge that allows the phone to open up in style. It first lifts then pops down again. According to HTC it is easier for fat-thumbed or long-nailed people to type. The keys too are slightly raised and easy to press.

Audio

The Desire Z is pre-loaded with a great music player. It can play many formats including MP3, AAC, eAAC+, OGG & WMA. Also, it has a speaker system and a 3.5mm jack that offers great quality sound. The phone memory can be enhanced to allow users to store music downloaded online.

HTC Desire Z

Messaging

Messaging is one of the most important aspects of HTC Desire Z. The QWERTY keyboard calls for some serious messaging. Also, it has a unified inbox. This feature is great for those who juggle a couple of email accounts. With the Desire Z one can see all of ones in a single inbox that has an automatic coloration code for each email account. Email filters sort the emails by groups, importance or content as specified by the user.

Media

The media side of things are also quite good in the desire Z. However, this is not the phone's best feature and it was neither intended to be so. The presence of DLNA sharing is an interesting addition. One can stream ones pictures, videos and music from ones phone to home theatre system via DLNA. Music and video also sound pretty good.

Internet

The HTC desire Z has an in-built adobe flash Player support. Thus no websites are unavailable. Also, there is no need to wait while pages are getting loaded, other pages can be viewed in separate windows. 3G network coverage is used for internet connection. To achieve a faster connection, WiFi can also be used.

Storage

The Desire Z has an 800MHz processor, a 1.5 GB memory and 512MB of RAM. The memory can be expanded using a microSD card.

Connectivity and Data

The HTC Desire Z is a quad-band GSM phone that supports GSM 850/900/1800/1900. It also features Bluetooth 2.1, A2DP support and a microUSB connectivity. It is compatible with WiFi technology also.

Usability & Performance

The new HTC Desire Z is a great handset that performs reasonably well. It manages to impress with its slider QWERTY keyboard. The call quality is pretty good too. It has a 1300mAH Li-Ion battery that offers a 9 hours talktime and a 430hours standby time.

The Nokia 6350 is the second product offering from AT&T. This flip phone has a sleek and stylish design. The best thing about the phone is it has got all it takes to be a basic communication tool. This is also a great multimedia phone. The phone also has a decent call quality and comes at an affordable rate. The rated battery life of Nokia 6350 is 4.2 hours- quite satisfactory.

Design and Dimensions

The Nokia 6350 measures 3.7 x 1.9 x 0.7 inches and weighs only about 3.6 ounces. It is available in two colors – deep red and graphite. The handset is slim with supple lines and has a soft material covering the front and back part of it. A prominent chrome band accentuates the sides of the handset and a black plastic and chrome lines the internal alphanumeric keypad.

Nokia 6350 Camera

The Nokia 6350 comes with a 2 megapixel camera that can take snaps in 3 quality settings and in 4 resolutions. It also has a multi-shot mode, a self timer and 4 x digital zoom. The standard settings offered are color effects, white balance and brightness control. The camera can also be used as a camcorder to shoot videos in the standard mode.

Basic Features

The Nokia 6350 features 3G connectivity, a 2MP camera, web browser, email and also some multimedia features. It is available in red and gray. It also has a good internal display with QVGA resolution capable of displaying 16 million colors. It also comes with Bluetooth, microUSB connector.

Interface: The Nokia 6350 has an easy to use interface for the menu and other than that a number of customizable options are available too. The font type and size in the home screen can be changed and some short icons can also be added.

Phone Book: The phone book of Nokia 6350 can hold up to 1000 contacts. For each entry there is space for 5 phone numbers, address, birthday, 2email ids, a nickname, a formal name, notes, job title and company name.

Screen

The Nokia 6350 comes with an external display that measures 1.3 inches and has a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. The external display shows the battery life, date, signal strength, photo caller, time and works as a View finder. It is slightly dim and lacks in contrast. The LCD inside measures about 2 inches and has a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. It is crisp and reasonably bright.

Keypad and Controls

The OK button in the center has a four-way navigation key. Apart from that there are two soft keys, talk and power/end keys, browser shortcut key and a key dedicated each to the GPS feature and camera. The alphanumeric keypad is flat and spacious and this makes dialing and texting easier. The backlighting of the keys is also quite bright and the numbers are also large enough, thus making it easier to enter the numbers. The lack of a QWERTY keypad hardly makes this one a messaging phone.

Audio

The Nokia 6350 comes with a music player where one can enjoy ones favourite music. The music controls present just beneath the external display can be used to activate the music player without opening the phone. The audio quality is impressive. Support for MIDI, MP3, MP4, WAV, WMA etc is provided. Other features include equalizer, shuffle, album art, repeat modes, playlists and airplay mode.

Messaging

The Nokia 6350 allows users to create and send SMSs, MMSs and emails. IMAP4 and POP3 can be accessed via headset and hence emails can be sent through a Web based interface. The only thing that comes as a drawback is the typing has to be done on the alphanumeric keypad. Support for AOL, Windows live and Yahoo messenger is also provided.

Media

The Nokia 6350 comes with great multimedia features. It allows one to upload videos, photos, songs and other items from ones PC through the built-in microUSB port. One can go on streaming AT&T Cellular Video , listen to XM Satellite Radio, purchase music tracks from Napster and eMusic, look-up entries in Yellow Pages Mobile and Where( location based). Other titles offered by the mobile are WikiMobile, Weather Channel, currency and unit converter.

Internet

With the Nokia 6350 the user can browse the Web in an HTML and XHTML Web browsing via the WAP 2.0 browser.

Storage

It has an internal memory of 52MB which is expandable up to 16GB as 6350 and additionally comes with a microSD card.

Connectivity and Data

The Nokia 6350 supports many connectivity tools like GPRS, EDGE and Bluetooth. One can also gain access to several of AT&T’s exclusive data services like AT&T Navigator, a basic GPS program that can provide reliable maps and directions. Also, video share feature of AT&T allows live or recorded videos to be shared with other AT&T subscribers. With HSDPA and 3G connectivity one can experience a faster data transfer.

Usability and Performance

The call quality of Nokia 6350 is decent with great signal reception. Callers can be heard quite loud and clear and the phone does not pick up any background sounds. The call quality for the Bluetooth set and the speakerphone is also good. However, the audio and video streaming quality is not up to the mark.

Life is Good and with the release of the one of its latest phones LG has proved it all over again! The LG COOKIE KM555 combines class and convenience. This phone has a slim and sleek metallic body that makes a fashion statement. It has a very sensitive, accurate and responsive touchscreen. Moreover it has all the connections one needs like Bluetooth, WiFi, GPRS, EDGE.

Design and Dimensions

The KM555 measures 104.9 x 52.6 x 11.9 mm and just weighs 90 g. It is aesthetically designed in keeping with LG’s tradition. It has a light catching metallic body , an almost mirrored finish that makes one want to caress it! It is available in three colors including black, silver and violet. It also has slim side buttons that jut out of the edges like ribs to offer volume, music, power and camera controls.

Camera

The KM555 comes with a 3 Megapixel camera. However, it does not have flash. The picture quality is good and the camera allows users to take crisp photos and videos. It can speed-shoot up to nine shots at once and also offers a range of photo effects and adjustments. There is a dedicated camera key for convenience.

Basic Features

The new LG KM555 is a touchscreen handset that comes with a high speed 3G, a 3MP camera, music and video players, FM radio and Bluetooth. It comes with two unique features that are absent in most of the smart phones- multitasking and copy paste. It allows several applications to be run at a time. Also, it enables users to select portions of text from a web page and insert them in emails.

Interface: The interface of the phone is very simple and easy to understand. It comes wit an acelerator that allows auto rotation.

Phone Book: The phone book of the KM555 can store up to a 1000 entries.

The screen allows movements that can be performed with only one finger like tapping, scrolling, swiping and pressing. This implies one has to use the scroll bar to zoom.

Keypad and Controls

The LG KM555 does not have a keypad and it takes time to get used to this. An onscreen QWERTY keypad appears when the phone is held in landscape mode. When in portrait mode one has to press each key continuosly to move to the letter options. As this takes a lot of time one can activate the T9. Also, a handwriting box enables one to draw out letters but this is not a viable solution either as the handwriting box is too small.

Audio

Music playback is one of the best features of the LG KM555. The speakers are good and it has Dolbi Presets. One can also enjoy music using the in-built FM radio.
